Think Ink

I’m always surprised to find myself considering buying anything other than earrings at an art fair, but some ink drawings I saw at the 57th Street Art Fair this summer stopped me in my tracks, and I love the one I bought—a rural scene crisscrossed by power lines. The artist is Taylor Mazer, and his moody, painstakingly detailed landscapes include scenes of Chicago that are far lovelier than the sentimental, boosterish images that art fairs tend to have too many of. He draws from photos he takes of vistas that grab him, everything from thick clouds gathering over farmland to city streets washed by soft morning light, as above. The 24-year-old native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, now lives in Grand Rapids, but he often comes here to see what there is to see. His work is available through his website and also at Cureeo.

Taylor's attention to detail has a way of making one appreciate the quiet moments in a busy city. I love his work! If you take a closer look at your piece, you might find that he has worked in his name somehow, but you have to look very carefully. As an example, take a look at his artwork labelled Clark (can be found under Taylor Mazer's profile page on Cureeo). In the lower right corner, you'll find that the license plate on the taxi says Taylor. He has hidden surprises like this that are easy to overlook when you're simply in awe of the other details in the piece. Kind Regards.
