Full disclosure: The following paragraph contains shameless self-promotion. Please proceed with cautious optimism! In my “spare” time away from mommydom and scouting scoop and styling for Chicago Home + Garden, I am a partner in crime at M&B Vintage, a jewelry company that was started with long-time BFF and styling cohort, Marie Moss. We were recently asked by interior designer and all-around-generous-pal and client Nate Berkus (he recently gave our charmers to Marc Jacobs and chef Jamie Oliver’s new daughter, Petal) to be guests on his Oprah and Friends radio show. You see, a few years back, when the search for one-of-a-kind baby gear turned up cookie-cutter finds for our own daughters, Marie and I headed to the flea market. We shared the ideas and inspiration in our book, Flea Market Baby (Stewart, Tabori & Chang). It’s a little you-can-do-it-too guide for decorating and gift-giving with a hint of history. Nate helps share our scoop on nurseries, memory making and our own M&B style with his listeners May 30 at 10AM EST on XM 156 and Sirius 195. We hope you’ll tune in to hear us dish about our digs. 05/28/09Obsession | V&Mmmmm Just Got More Delicious
Vintage and Modern—is my new 1st dibs. Well, a price-friendlier, more accessible resource in my stash–with a similar vibe. (I still Jones for a dib now and again!) If you’ve not visited, V&M is a well-curated, dealer-direct site of online storefronts selling antiques, modern furnishings, collectibles, art, and jewelry. Its new, 2.0 version just launched and now offers global services in 40 different languages—it translates, and even converts pricing to the users’ native currency (easy for even a non-techy novice like me to buy from abroad!). Also new is a “Facebook-like” function where you can meet and greet and connect with dealers and buyers—including viewing their pics and stats. Listings include shops, decorators, and stylists in your area, too. You’ll recognize a few locals, (UberModern, Scout, Hudson Home, Scentimental Gardens, Zig Zag, and more). It can be a great way to preview the merch before taking a trek to a store, or doing a pre-shop for gift or decorating needs. Photos are stellar, many color-corrected in Photoshop so there are no surprises. I heart the E collection for my daughter Emma. New inventory gets posted Tuesday mornings, so wake with the birds to nudge in-the-know-designers outta the way for fresh finds. —Barri Leiner Photographs courtesy of Vintage & Modern Posted at 10:03 AM in Obsession | Permalink | Comments (0) |

05/27/09Happy Hour | In the Eye of the Dome
If you have not been to the Mart’s south lobby lately, do yourself a favor and check it out. There you’ll find an incredible installation of Buckminster Fuller’s “Fly’s Eye Dome,” which was built for the Mart’s recent Artropolis exhibit (and to promote the Buckminster Fuller exhibit at the MCA. Made of 50 fiberglass sections, it’s 24 feet high, and weighs 3,500 pounds. Fuller, an architect and all-around visionary had originally conceived of this design as pre-fab affordable housing (the holes were for windows). So it’s appropriate that the Mart incarnation is filled with—and surrounded by—futuristic-looking furniture from the Vitra showroom, including the cool Vegetal chairs (whose design is inspired by the shape of a mature tree) and the funky high-backed Alcove sofas, both by French brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, shown above. The amazing green mass that hangs around the chandelier inside the dome is also from Vitra—called Algues, it’s actually a puzzle-like plastic room divider comprised of branches that can be assembled and molded into any shape or size. The dome and furniture will be on display through mid-June, coming down after the Mart’s major commercial furnishings show, NeoCon. —Gina Bazer Posted at 09:51 AM in Happy Hour | Permalink | Comments (0) |

05/26/09Happy Hour | Center Stage
Some months ago I agreed to put our house on a tour in Oak Park on June 20, called South Oak Park Style: A Tour of Modest Homes. Our home is indeed modest (it’s a 1,700-square-foot Prairie-style bungalow). Worthy of a tour? Don’t ask me. I’m the editor of a design magazine, of all things, so as you might imagine, I’m exposed to tons of gorgeous interiors everyday in my job that I can’t afford and don’t have the time to execute in my own home (I believe you are familiar with the cobbler’s children….) . —Jan Parr Posted at 10:30 AM in Happy Hour | Permalink | Comments (1) |

05/22/09Happy Hour | In the Bedroom
Chicago artist Ben Brandt's work was featured in our Jan/Feb issue, is currently on display on the walls of the Smart Home, and will be coming soon to some guy's Bridgeport bedroom. Seriously. If you're chillin' in the city for Memorial Day, the show is kicking off with an opening reception on Friday, May 22, from 7–11 p.m. at the Second Bedroom Project Space, a seven-by-twelve-foot room with 10-foot ceilings and an intrusive flashing blue light courtesy of the neighboring CPD. (Gotta love a gallery mission statement that says it encourages risk-taking work as long as it doesn't result in losing the owner's security deposit or getting evicted.) Brandt is tackling the role of the interior designer in this installation, blurring the boundary of the body and architecture “with floral arrangements, flannel, site-specific paintings, and sculpture.” Huh. He also has work up in “Artists Run Chicago,” a group show celebrating the 70th year of the Hyde Park Art Center. Happy anniversary to HPAC, Happy Memorial Day to Design Dosers, and go to your room, Ben! -BRADLEY LINCOLN Posted at 09:13 AM in Happy Hour | Permalink | Comments (0) |

05/21/09Happy Hour | Andersonville Galleria, Revisited
The threat of bad weather wasn’t enough to keep a crowd from last Friday night’s grand re-opening of Andersonville Galleria. This unique indie-market/bazaar now offers three floors and more than 90 local vendors of art, fashion, sweet treats, and home décor. Some of my favorites included colorful hanging votives from City Scents; graphic silk pillows from Design Hut; organic hand-printed canvasses by Kuketa; and some fantastic chrome-plated log stools from Blue Bell Bazaar. If you missed the party, make the Galleria a must-stop on your next home-shopping foray through Andersonville, which we thoughtfully already mapped out for you in our March/April 2009 issue (check it out here). —Adam Moroschan Posted at 01:35 PM in Happy Hour | Permalink | Comments (0) |

05/21/09Happy Hour | Harbor Country
It’s summer, and that means finding reasons to head to Harbor Country. Two good ones in the next few weeks: an event called Revive Your Green Retreat on May 30 at Susan Fredman’s At Home With Nature in Union Pier, and the Heartland Alliance house walk June 6. At the Revive Your Retreat event, speakers throughout the day (including me, talking about green décor trends) will discuss the nuts and bolts of creating a healthy, environmentally friendly home. Learn about eco-color trends, composting, finding tax breaks and home loans for green homes, and creating a green wedding. For the kids: ice cream, and getting crafty with recycled materials. See the full schedule and RSVP on the site. The next Saturday, The Heartland Alliance Celebration of Home & Garden Tour starts at 10 a.m. and features seven impressive Harbor Country homes, from an antiques-filled Normandy-style house to a Hamptons-style cottage. Proceeds go toward the development of affordable housing. —Jan Parr Posted at 09:39 AM in Happy Hour | Permalink | Comments (0) |

05/20/09Scoop | To Market with Decorator Laura Soskin!
Chicago Home + Garden will be at the opening day (Saturday, May 23) of the Randolph Street Market with decorator Laura Soskin, who will pull together a fab room furnished with her favorite finds at the Market that day—and she will do so over the course of several hours! The room will be on display Saturday only on the second floor stage inside the Hall. All items in the room will be for sale (last year, when our stylist Barri Leiner pulled of the same feat, the items sold right off the set)! Looking for some fun this weekend? Head to Buchanan, Michigan, just west of Three Oaks and about an hour-and-a-half drive, where several businesses are opening their storefronts to serve wine and nibbles to celebrate the birth of a revitalized downtown there. Highlights are antiques shops owned by a couple of Chicagoans: Alan Robandt and Thomas Jolly. See our story on the two here. The Buchanan Museum of Fine Art is celebrating its grand opening, too. The party takes place from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 23, on Front Street. —JAN PARR Posted at 10:01 AM in InBox | Permalink | Comments (0) |

05/15/09Happy Hour | Winging It
Zoe Ryan, the enthusiastic and talented design curator at the Art Institute of Chicago, gave me a brief tour of the department's new space in the Renzo Piano-designed Modern Wing the other day. She and her colleagues have put together some terrific displays of functional art. I especially loved the exhibit of iconic seating by Ron Arad, Marcel Wanders, Konstantin Grcic, along with lighting by Ingo Mauer, among others (see it 'til January). Along with gorgeous flatware in one case were elegantly simple, reversible drinking glasses by an under-the-radar Chicagoan, Felicia Ferrone (more on her in the next issue of Chicago Home + Garden). -JAN PARR Posted at 09:56 AM in Happy Hour | Permalink | Comments (2) |

05/13/09Scoop | The Suite Life
Ever checked into Fort Pitt? Known for its warehouse full of used hotel furnishings from across the country, they’ve recently hit the penthouse! The Ritz-Carlton Chicago is redecorating 23 top-floor suites and Fort Pitt is selling the furniture and accessories the hotel is unloading—Louis XVI styles complete with ball and claw foots details, solid and stately pieces from big-name makers Traditional Hickory, Thomasville, Baker, as well as Frederick Cooper lamps in marble and solid brass (owner Scott Zawitz scored a few for his hip homestead—see his place in the July/August issue of Chicago Home + Garden). I’d love the half-moon tables in an entry hall, decorative side tables mixed into a more modern interior, elegant armoires, sleeper sofas as instant guest quarters. It’s all in great shape but a tad traditional for our eye. At these prices ($99–$299) we say the occasional upholstered chairs are ripe for your reupholstery, and fine wood pieces ready for a repainting, refinishing, or lush coat of lacquer. DIY or ring Agnes Barron, at Meble Custom Design Studio, 773-772-8200; she’s done the trick on many a find. See the Ritz haul at 1400 W. 37th St., Saturdays 9:30AM to 5:30PM and Sundays noon-5PM. —BARRI LEINER Posted at 09:41 AM in Scoop | Permalink | Comments (1) |

05/11/09Happy Hour | Decorating is Fun!
Decorating is fun! Or so the legendary decorator Dorothy Draper reminds us. We were channeling Dot last night at Bedside Manor, where the linens boutique was welcoming its new partnership with Kindel furniture, and in particular, the Grand Rapid, Michigan company’s Dorothy Draper Collection. Draper’s painted chest was featured—in black and gold—in Vogue’s offices in the Sex and the City movie. Also shown here: the Dorothy Draper chair. The folks from Grand Rapids were in attendance to celebrate and tell their story—the firm was founded in 1912 and continues its commitment to traditional styles, with hand-carving, bench-assembly, and hand-finishing. See samples of Kindel’s furniture, available to order, in all Bedside’s locations. —JAN PARR Posted at 09:50 AM in Happy Hour | Permalink | Comments (0) |

05/08/09Obsession | But I Want One!
I got a big white metal beverage tub at the Target Bullseye Bazaar yesterday, but what I really wanted was one of those French market baskets that were stacked up in front for shopping purposes. I asked one of the salespeople if I could buy one, and the answer was no. I asked her to ask the manager, and the manager, too, said no. No? How could that be? I was willing to pay for one! I felt like my four-year-old son: helpless in the face of authority. I didn’t throw a tantrum, though. After a quick Web search I found Medina Baskets, which carries plenty of similar totes. Also, I thought about it, and let’s say I really wanted to buy one of the big red shopping carts they have at the regular Target, the answer would also probably have been no. C’est la vie! Now if only I could teach my son that concept. —Gina Bazer Posted at 03:07 PM in Obsession | Permalink | Comments (0) |

05/07/09Spotted | Target Distilled
What’s more fun that Target? Target, edited! Bullseye Bazaar is a Target “pop-up” store (a boutique open for just a few days; they’ve done this in L.A. and New York; this is our city’s first), with a great selection of home goods, fashion, and accessories from Target’s design partners (some things are exclusive to the Bazaar). I got a sneak peek at a press preview today. In my shopping bag (or on my wish list): Smith & Hawken for Target lights for the yard, green floral melamine plates, DwellStudio’s grey bath towels and grey-and-yellow floral pillows, and upholstered Jolie chairs (to see and order) like the one shown above. But the main target of my affection: Blu Dot’s Real Good powder-coated steel chair, in super-fun colors (shown above in white), for just $99 (it’s $129 elsewhere). Find home accessories from Thomas O’Brien, Michael Graves, and Victoria Hagan, too. Shop May 7-9, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., 445 N. 05/05/09Spotted | Everybody Must Get Stone
Studio Stone Design is a great new resource for those who are working with a kitchen designer but can’t decide on what kind of stone they want—and also don’t want to drive out to a huge, faraway location to make their decision. This smaller outpost of Stone Design (a major Midwest supplier with a Glendale Heights–based warehouse that contains some 14,000 slabs) features 120 panels, ranging from granite to onyx, allowing customers an edited menu of options from which to choose. For those who want more choices, there is also an onsite “virtual warehouse,” a 56-by-96-inch HDTV that shows high-resolution photos of the slabs at the Glendale Heights warehouse. Located at 1355 W. Concord Pl. (800-424-1332) in the former Casamonte space, 800-424-1332. —Gina Bazer Posted at 09:43 AM in Spotted | Permalink | Comments (0) |

05/04/09Spotted | Holland & Sherry
I stopped by Susan Fredman’s At Home in the City last week to see the store’s new tableware collection , which was fab (love the mix-and-match ideas), but also got acquainted with the exquisite linens of C&C Milano and Holland & Sherry. These fine linens are usually only available to the trade through the Mart, but are now exclusively available at the store. You can get ideas from samples at the store, but everything is available custom. The trims and details on these handmade linens blew me away. 05/01/09Happy Hour | Artful Dodging
Holy Hockneys, Batman—there are a LOT of mighty fine art events going on in the city this weekend! We have the Mart's trilogy of trade, Artropolis, consisting of the sprawling Art Chicago on the 12th floor, with modern and contemporary offerings (although I'm told that this year they've changed the floor plan of the fair so that it's not quite so sprawling…I was always wandering in circles, not sure how many booths were left to see), the NEXT show, on 7, which serves up more cutting-edge culture, and a grande dame of an antiques fair on 8, showing—you guessed it—antiques, from 100+ dealers. Wear comfortable shoes, please. But it's not all about the Mart this time of year—the international art world focuses on Chicago, and local galleries use that attention to showcase the finest fillies in their stable. Richard Gray has a terrific one-man Marc Swanson show in their John Hancock gallery (that's Swanson's twinkling taxidermy above) and dealer Aldo Castillo has curated the second coming of Chicago's only Latin American art exhibit ARTEahora at his River North gallery. And, as I mentioned last month, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will be bringing down the hammer on art and rare books from the collection of the recently shuttered Robert Henry Adams gallery, on Monday May 4. This Rudolph Weisenborn 1951 portrait is among the 285 lots, available for viewing now. -BRADLEY LINCOLN Posted at 09:50 AM in Happy Hour | Permalink | Comments (0) |
