Spotted | Dunes and Duchess

The first booth that made me stop and take a look at the New York Gift Fair was Dunes and Duchess. We’re happy to find out that the firm’s lamps and candelabras, made from turned maple in the U.S., will be carried at Elements here starting mid-October. Check this space for more cool things that Elements, one of Chicago’s trend-setting boutiques, found at the fair and that will soon be gracing their shelves.

InBox | New from Alessi

You can always count on Alessi for cool, innovative, and whimsical designs. I spotted these fun cat bowls at the New York Gift Show a few weeks ago. If you (like I) have a dog that likes to sneak bites of kitty’s food, these lids are a great idea. The cutting board also impressed me—just slide a plate under the top portion and scoop all your chopped vegetables right onto it, without creating a mess. Call the local store (312-274-6500) for price and availability.

InBox | Labor Day Weekend Harbor Country

It’s a party in Harbor Country this weekend. Nonpareil in downtown Buchanan, Michigan, takes place on historic Front Street Saturday, September 4 from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event features artists and musicians, with wine tasting receptions in the town’s galleries and home décor shops later in the evening. Also on Saturday (just 20 minutes west in Three Oaks), Brandon Nelson of Ipso Facto celebrates the grand opening of his cooperative art, antiques and design shop, Trilogy Antiques, pictured here. The celebration begins at 6 p.m. at the new store’s location, 19 S. Elm St. Vendors include Alan Palmer, Elizabeth Coyne, Francois Robert, and many more. We’re crossing our fingers for fantastic weather. Enjoy the holiday; Design Dose returns Tuesday!

InBox | Graham & Brown’s Shape & Form

Graham & Brown, the innovative wallcoverings company, has hit another home run with its new, architecturally inspired collection, Shape & Form. The papers are inspired by geometric shapes and the use of shadows to create the illusion of depth and texture. Hints of mica and gloss glam up the monochromatic colors.

InBox | Cynthia Vardhan porcelain

This new independent ceramic designer based in Columbus, Ohio, sent us a note about her handmade, intricately patterned porcelain. Vardhan throws her pots, vases, and dishes on a wheel in her attic studio and applies the patterns using a technique that gives it a raised texture. See them at Bramble in Oak Park.

Spotted | Sharyn Blond Linens

How exquisite are these guest towels from Sharyn Blond Linens—new at Kneen & Co.? Hand-sewn and hand-finished by seamstresses in Madeira, Portugal, they’d make a stunning gifts ($80 each). See the entire line (including bed linens and holiday) here or make an appointment to stop by and meet Blond at a trunk show September 15–16.

Spotted | SL Consignment

For the current issue of our sister publication, Chicago magazine (buy it here), I wrote a fall travel piece on a terrific home-style destination, Buchanan, Michigan. Just two hours away (and a short hop from Lakeside, Union Pier, and Three Oaks), this little town has recently turned into a great weekend destination. One shop I didn’t have room to mention: SL Consignment Gallery at 211 E. Front St. (312-310-1148). Steve Raglin, who designs residential and corporate interiors in Chicago, opened the store in September of last year. He’s got an eclectic mix, including many of his own pieces he’s found in his years of exploring flea markets and antique stores.

Spotted | Fine Line Tile Sale

Fine Line Tile Gallery has outgrown its digs at 209 W. Illinois St. and is moving across the street October 1 to a space two-and-a-half times bigger. To get ready for the move, they’re holding a rummage sale in their basement: find all sorts of interesting tile (some of which retailed for more than $40 a square foot), all for $10 a foot, cash-and-carry.
