Peek Season

For those of you who are thinking of building a new home, remodeling your current one, or just love checking out fab spaces (I’m solidly in the last category), here’s an open house to check out this weekend. Orren Pickell Building Group just finished a top-of-the-line concept house and is opening its doors for you to explore inside. There’s nothing I can think of that this home doesn’t have—including a sleeping porch (perfect for pitching a tent), cigar patio (because who doesn’t need that?), and a full outdoor kitchen. The open house is this weekend and next (11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday) at 27 Aberdeen in Bannockburn. Just knock on the door to get a tour or to walk around on your own. Admission is free, with a donation area set up for Toys for Tots.

Deal With It

There are some furniture stores that wow you with staging, presentation, and atmosphere. And then there are others that cut costs by displaying their goods in a huge warehouse with few frills. The first type is a joy to browse in, but the second is where you’re likelier to find the real bargains. As one of the second types of furniture stores, bargains are what Interior Express Outlet (794 Golf Lane, Bensenville; 630-238-6675) is all about. And this weekend, the deals are even better than usual. Some of their biggest sellers have come back in stock and they’re having a warehouse sale Friday through Sunday. There’s furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom, bar, and office, as well as artwork for around 30 percent off. The prices are really low: shelving units for $41, mid-century-modern-ish accent chairs for $166, wooden kitchen carts for $201 (shown here), sleeper sofas for $571, and huge sectionals for $1,371, just to give you an idea.
