The Painted Lady, more photos in the gallery below.
Bigtime design sources—European Furniture Warehouse, Salvage One, Modern Times, and the auction house Wright—have dotted the West Town landscape for years, but enough newness has emerged in recent months to tie it all together as a certified design destination. Urban Remains was around the corner on Paulina for four years, but the spring 2010 opening of a sunnier showroom on the main drag has attracted well-deserved attention from an ever-expanding clientele. Vintage source Post 27 has established itself in just two years as a major player. Interior designers and their clients love to shop at Uber Modern, which now sells its wares within sister venture MCM Grand, a mall of mid-century style. Bucktown’s The Painted Lady opened a second outpost to showcase owner Beth Harlow’s painted antiques, and the suburban shop Scentimental Gardens opened an edgier urban locale—full of chic antiques and flea-market finds—dubbed SG Grand. Another suburban import, pop-up shop Grand Avenue Living (from the owners of Geneva’s 610 Home) is positioning itself to open a permanent space later this year, and fellow Geneva offshoot State Street Salvage is offering 2,000 square feet of found objects, repurposed furniture, and fine art photography. Buckingham Interiors & Design’s showroom (open weekdays) features terrific new and vintage furnishings. Almost nothing for sale in this neighborhood is mass-produced or boring—ain’t that Grand?
